Just because we experience something physically does not mean it is purely physical illness. In some cases physical illness is the body expressing unresolved wounds that began in the mind. Sometimes the original wound is formed so long ago that we can't even repress.
The Autonomic Nervous System controls the majority of the body's function without our conscious participation. There are also times when the origins of physical illness are actually physical but rarely does it remain exclusively physical because the nervous system is not a one way street. Not only does information travel from brain to body but it also travels from the body back to brain.
When we are physically not well we often feel unsafe and feeling unsafe is a holistic phenomenon our thoughts are impacted (mind), our hormones (emotional state) are impacted and our ability to trust and have faith is challenged. Nothing can stay exclusively physical forever. So of course the functional medicine paradigm is limited when we attempt to classify illness as either physical or mental and completely ignore the emotional and spiritual dimensions of health. But ultimately the underlying theme of an illness will make its way through all 4 dimensions and it will continue to circulate until we identify that theme and address it Holistically . The body cannot be healed while there remains an unquiet mind, the mind cannot be well if there's emotional turmoil and nothing can be whole unless the spirit is also considered. A holistic approach doesn't merely abolish symptoms which are after all only an outer manifestation of inner pain.
